Careers in Social Impact (CISI) 2021

Careers in Social Impact aims to broaden employment prospects whilst showing the meaningful impact one can manifest through these jobs. The event invited a welcoming range of different panellists from various backgrounds. This included Sruthi Srikanthan from “Deloitte Access Economics”, who has experience across a range of health and social policy sectors in identifying issues and making an impact for social change. Similarly, Doug Hume from “Social Ventures Australia”, and Y le from “Department of Treasury and Finance Victoria” both have or are currently working in the government sector and realised their potential for social change through the social system itself by making tangible meaningful changes that can be realised over many years. Timothy Jacobs from “Who Gives a Crap” began his career at EY but through his education and vast experience at his time at EY, found an opportunity to harness his skills to be a part of an organisation that has a social impact beyond the typical commerce realm. Claire Marshall from “Cube Group”, saw an opportunity with the company to leverage her sector experience and create positive change for communities through her consulting skills.

A common theme that arose across the panellists was that they did not necessarily begin searching for careers with the mindset to make a social impact but rather found the opportunities that arose within their study and careers to harness and incorporate change to the broader community. This was important to remind students that no matter where you begin, continually making new pathways may provide more opportunities to create a positive social impact on those in need.

The second half of the event also provided diverse opportunities for attendees to network and learn from numerous different types of sponsors including STEM, social enterprises, teaching, consulting and finance. These included Deloitte Access Economics, Australian Super, CSIRO, Cube Group, Teach for Australia, Society Melbourne, Social Ventures Australia, SGS Economics & Planning, Department of Treasury and Finance Victoria, Who Gives a Crap and ntegrity.
