MMI x Oaktree Unimelb Present: Whose Impact is it Anyway?

For our last event of 2018, Melbourne Microfinance Initiative (MMI) collaborated with Oaktree’s Melbourne counterpart to host a panel-style event titled, “Whose Impact is it Anyway?”

The four guest speakers came from a range of start-ups and NGOs. This included Project Lantern - a Melbourne-based podcast that describes itself as “the global launchpad for youth-led social impact”.

It was an interactive event, opportunities being given to audience members to pose questions to the unique variety of panelists. Discussions ranged from the strengths to pitfalls of NGOs. Furthermore, the event was focused on delivering a critique of the tools and metrics of social impact. Guest speakers centred their discussion around the effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of work in the social impact sphere, the ability to cope with cynicism around the work being done; and challenged the status quo of volunteering.

Overall an intimate, interactive event - many members of the audience shared positive feedback about the insights they received through this collaboration. MMI looks forward to engaging with more student clubs and third-party organisations to deliver more impact-focused events in the future.
